Image to 3D Print: From a Photo to an STL You Can Slice

Turn one image into a printable part: generate a mesh on TripoSplat, convert it to STL in the browser, fix the scale, and slice it in the tool you already use.

Getting from an image to a 3D print is a chain, not a single button. A printer only sees geometry in a file you export, so the AI step has to produce a mesh that the browser tools can convert to STL, and the slicer still owns scale, wall thickness, supports, and G-code. This page lays out that chain and where each step belongs on TripoSplat.

A Gaussian splat is not printable on its own - it is a scene to look at, not a solid shell. If you were expecting a splat to print directly, read Gaussian splat is not a print for why, then come back here for the mesh route.

Nothing here slices a model. There is no G-code output and no automatic support generation on this site.

Step by step

  1. Shoot a printable subject. Solid, opaque, hand-sized objects print best: a mug, a tool handle, a toy, a bracket. Reflective, transparent, or very thin subjects (wire, antennae, foliage) reconstruct poorly and print worse.
  2. Generate a mesh, not a splat. Open the AI 3D Generator, upload the image (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or AVIF, up to 10 MB), and choose the mesh lane so the output is a GLB rather than a splat. The mesh lane is priced 160-310 credits depending on settings, and the workspace shows the price before you submit. The splat lane is cheaper but is the wrong output for printing.
  3. Convert GLB to STL. Run the file through GLB to STL in your browser. STL carries geometry only - no textures, no materials, no units - which is exactly why the next step matters.
  4. Fix the scale. Generated meshes carry no real-world unit. Work out a multiplier from millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches, or feet with the model scale calculator, then apply that scale in your slicer.
  5. Inspect, then slice. Open the STL in the STL viewer for a local check, then let your slicer report non-manifold edges, generate supports, and slice. Repair or thicken thin features before printing.

What stays with the slicer

  • Print orientation. Generated meshes have no preferred orientation; pick one in the slicer.
  • Supports and overhangs. Decide these after you see the real geometry.
  • Shell, infill, and hollowing. The mesh is a surface, not a hollowed solid.
  • Wall thickness. Anything thinner than your nozzle and layer height will not print as a wall.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to slice a Gaussian splat. Convert to a mesh first; splats are scenes, not shells.
  • Printing at default scale. The file has no units, so the size is arbitrary until you set it.
  • Assuming the mesh is watertight. Let the slicer report open or self-intersecting regions.
  • Expecting colour in the STL. STL drops textures; colour it in the slicer or print in one filament.
  • Printing from a reflective photo. Glare becomes fake surface detail that prints as noise.

FAQ

Can I print a Gaussian splat directly?

No. A splat is not a solid shell. Generate the mesh lane instead, then convert that mesh to STL.

Which format do I export for a printer?

STL is the usual target, produced from the mesh with GLB to STL. Keep the original mesh if your slicer reads GLB or OBJ directly.

Do the converters cost anything?

No. The browser converters, the scale calculator, and the STL viewer run locally and need no account and no credits.

How do I get the size right?

Measure one known dimension or use the model scale calculator, then set the scale in the slicer before slicing.

Start from the AI 3D Generator, or read the 3D mesh generator guide for how the mesh lane differs from the splat lane.
