How do I open an FBX file without software?
FBX is Autodesk's interchange format for 3D scenes. Desktop apps such as Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity and Unreal all import it, but installing one of them just to look at a file someone sent you is slow. A browser viewer answers the first question you usually have: is this the right model, and does it look correct?
The viewer on this page uses the open-source three.js FBXLoader and runs entirely on your device. It centres the model and scales it to fit the view, so a character exported in centimetres and a prop exported in metres both appear at a readable size. Your file never leaves the tab, which matters when the asset is client work or still under NDA.
Open an FBX file in your browser, step by step
- Choose your
.fbxfile in the viewer at the top of this page, or drag it onto the drop zone. Files up to 50 MB are accepted. - Wait for the confirmation line that shows the format and file size. Large meshes can take a few seconds on a phone or an older laptop.
- Drag to orbit, right-drag or two-finger drag to pan, and scroll or pinch to zoom. Look at the silhouette, the proportions and whether anything is floating away from the main mesh.
- When you are done, close the tab. Nothing was stored, so there is no copy to delete.
If you prefer a full-page tool, the same viewer lives at the free FBX viewer. For other formats, the 3D model viewer opens GLB, OBJ, STL and FBX from one drop zone.
What the viewer shows and what it does not
What you can check
- The overall shape, pose and proportions of the model.
- Orientation problems, such as a model lying on its back because the exporter used a different up axis.
- Stray geometry, missing parts and obviously broken faces before the file goes into a review or a build.
What you should check elsewhere
- Animation clips and rigs. The viewer shows the model as it loads; it does not play or scrub animation takes.
- Textures stored as separate files. You only give the browser the single
.fbxfile, so image files that sit next to it on your disk are not part of what was opened. If the model appears untextured, re-export with media embedded in the FBX. - Exact units, polygon counts and material settings. Use your DCC tool or engine for those numbers.
Why an FBX file will not open
Old FBX versions
The three.js documentation states that FBXLoader needs files in FBX version 7.0 or later in ASCII form, or binary files from version 6400 onward. Very old exports, often from tools last updated before 2011, fall outside that range. Re-export from any current DCC tool and the file normally opens.
Exporter-specific data
FBX is a proprietary format and exporters write it differently. If one file fails while others open, re-export it with standard settings: binary FBX, embedded media on, and no plugin-specific extras.
Files over 50 MB or no WebGL
The viewer rejects files above 50 MB to keep the tab stable. A blank canvas or a WebGL message means the browser has hardware acceleration turned off; switch it on, or try a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Export settings that make FBX files open everywhere
Most "this FBX is broken" reports come from export settings, not from the viewer. If you control the export, a few choices remove the usual problems before anyone has to debug them.
Embed the textures
In Blender's FBX exporter, set Path Mode to Copy and switch on the embed textures toggle next to it. Other DCC tools have an equivalent "embed media" option. The file gets larger, but the person you send it to sees the same surfaces you do, in a browser or in an engine.
Pick the axes and scale on purpose
Tools disagree about which axis points up and what one unit means. Blender exports with -Z forward and Y up by default, which is what most engines expect. If a model arrives lying on its back or a hundred times too large, the axis and scale settings at export are the first thing to check. The viewer above rescales the model to fit the screen, so it shows orientation problems clearly but is not the place to measure size.
Send one file, then the extras
Share the single FBX first and ask the recipient to open it in a browser. If the shape is right, send the high-resolution textures or the animation takes afterwards. It saves a round trip of large downloads for a model that turns out to be the wrong version.
Browser viewer or desktop app?
| Option | Install | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| This browser viewer | None | A quick shape check of a file you just received |
| Blender (free) | Desktop app | Inspecting rigs, animation and materials, then editing |
| Unity or Unreal | Desktop app | Checking how the asset behaves in the target engine |
Most people need the first row first and the other rows later. Opening the file in a tab tells you whether it is worth importing at all.
Need GLB, OBJ or STL instead?
If the next step is a web page, a game engine or a 3D printer, you may want another format. The free 3D format converter converts between GLB, OBJ and STL in the browser, and the GLB viewer and OBJ viewer let you check the result. FBX to GLB conversion itself is best done in Blender, which imports FBX and exports glTF.
FAQ
Is my FBX file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read by JavaScript in your tab and drawn with WebGL on your own graphics hardware. There is no upload step and no account.
Can I open FBX files on a phone?
Yes, in a current mobile browser. Use one finger to orbit and two fingers to pan and zoom. Heavy files load more slowly than on a desktop.
Does the viewer play FBX animations?
No. It is built for a fast shape and scale check. Review animation clips in Blender, Maya, Unity or Unreal.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes, 50 MB per file. Larger files are refused with a clear message instead of freezing the tab.
Next step
Drop your FBX file into the viewer above. If you are starting from a picture rather than a model, the TripoSplat image-to-3D generator turns one image into a Gaussian splat you can download as PLY or SPLAT; that is a splat, not an FBX mesh, so treat it as a different starting point.
